Third gender gets a place in census 2011

The form for census 2011 has a room for the third gender as it asks the person to specify whether the respondent is a male, female or falls in the 'other' category. The census operations are to be undertaken between February 9 and 28.

The form has 29 questions which take about 15 minutes to answer. Director of census operations in the state said that people should take out time to fill the forms as this information is imperative for the country's future growth and development.

In a bid to get information to strengthen the reproductive and child health strategies and know the efficacy of anti-child marriages law, couples will be asked about their age and date of marriage. Special focus will be on the reproductive age of the woman and number of children in the family. In addition, it will be noted whether the child is a boy or girl and about the child born in the past one year.

Questions will also be asked whether the respondent falls in the reserved category. Moreover, for the first time exhaustive information is being gathered about the disability in the country where eight kinds of disabilities have been included instead of the earlier census which included only three broad categories.

People will also be asked about their education wherein anybody who has studied below class 7 will be included on the illiterate list.

Meanwhile, census operations director Manish Bharadwaj urged people to actively participate in the exercise and patiently give all the details. "Even Gandhiji had asked people in his newspaper 'Young Citizen' to cooperate with the first census operation held in 1921 by the British," he said.

Stars of the popular TV serial 'Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma' were in the city to urge people to take part in census operations starting soon.
